Citation is giving reference to the source of information provided by someone else to use in your research. If you use quotes, paraphrase or summarize essential elements of someone else, you should cite them. As in a Youtube video, Citation is needed for copyright issues if you use any other information from other sources.

In-text Citation

In-text Citation is a notation within the text of your presentation which refers the reader to a fuller notation of the content, which alerts the reader to an idea that the information has been taken from an outside source.

There are two styles of Citation being used.

  • APA Style
  • MLA Style

APA Style

American Psychological Association, or APA, is the format citing sources you use to include in your video.

If you use APA Style:

  • It would help if you mentioned who wrote the source of the work.
  • What is the source of work called?
  • And where the reader can find a copy of the source.

What You Need to cite your Video in APA

If you want to cite your Video in APA style, you will need certain information to include in your Citation.

  • It should include the person’s name or group who uploaded the video.
  • Video uploader screen name.
  • All the data attached to the video include day, month, year.
  • Title of the Video
  • URL of the video’s webpage from where it is taken.

If you cannot find these things for youtube, then leave it out of the Citation but include the rest of the information in this format.

Step-by-Step guide in APA Style

  • List the actual last name of the video’s uploader, capitalizing the first letter. Place a comma after the last name and then list the first initial of their first name, followed by a period. If you find their middle initial, list it after the first initial and period, followed by a period. If the creator’s name is unavailable, skip this step and begin your Citation with the next step.
  • Next, list the video’s uploader’s screen name, as it is spelled on the page, within brackets. Place a period after the closing bracket.
  • The entire written month starts with a capital letter followed by a comma—the numerical day when the video is uploaded on youtube.
  • Put the video’s title in italics and sentence case (only capitalizing the first letter and proper nouns).
  • After the title, but the word video (for the source format), capitalized, in standard font, in brackets. Place a period after the closing bracket.
  • Please put the word YouTube (for the website source name) as it is spelled here, followed by a period.
  • List the full URL for the web page containing the YouTube video you are citing. Do not follow with a period.

APA style in-text citations for quoting and paraphrasing are the same for YouTube videos.

What You Need to cite your Video in MLA

  • First name, middle name, and surname, username, or name of the company that posted the content
  • Title of the Video
  • Title of the website (YouTube)
  • Publisher of the Video
  • When the video is posted on Youtube, including the date, month, and year

How to cite an MLA style on your Youtube video

MLA style for an online video contains the video’s creator details, the title, the website or platform in italics (e.g., YouTube), the channel or user that uploaded the video in the platform, the upload date, and the URL.

If the video was uploaded by the same person or organization that created it, leave the author element part and start with the video’s title instead.

The steps are mainly the same as the APA style with little difference.

Citing a YouTube Video

The citation starts with the title of the video. The YouTube channel’s name, also called the video uploader, is placed after YouTube is listed.

Structure

“Title of Video.” YouTube, YouTube Account name of the uploader, Day, Month, Year, URL.

In-text Citation

(“Title of Video.”)
